How It All Started

“Relationships have never been my thing.

I met my first love just before I was about to sit for my JAMB exam. It was a platonic relationship—infatuated love, I’d say. We were together without intimacy, as I was a virgin and wasn’t ready to give that up. Eventually, he tried to force himself on me, wanting sex, but I wasn’t ready, so we broke up.

Then, I met my baby’s father online. From the start, our relationship was toxic and abusive, but I chose to act like everything was fine because I loved him.

I met this guy in June 2020, though I can’t remember the exact date. We connected on Facebook, where I managed a group with about 4,000 members. He was just a regular Facebook friend, but I made him an admin of that group so we could run it together.

We started chatting, and after a few weeks, he asked me out. I boldly declined at first because I wasn’t interested in any relationship at that time. He kept pestering me until I gave in. We exchanged contacts and started talking on the phone. Ours was a long-distance relationship—he was based in Lagos, and I was in Awka. We dated online for about five months before deciding to meet.

I organized a ‘get-together’ for the group members in Anambra, which took place in Onitsha. He used this opportunity to meet me in person. We talked, and I found myself liking him.

We dated for six months without sex. I created boundaries and let things go my way. Despite how much I loved him, I wasn’t ready for sex, but eventually, he used marriage as bait. Not only did he get his way, but he also impregnated me.

I became pregnant, and that same year, I had to drop out of school after losing my dad—the man who had always been responsible for my education.

‘Oooo no…this wasn’t what I planned for. I have failed!’

My Horrible Story Began Here

I had to tell my mum. She was totally disappointed and sent me out.

I called my baby daddy that day. He begged me not to terminate the pregnancy, promising to come and take responsibility. He spoke to my mum and convinced her to take me back in.

My mum took me back, and we closed up like nothing had happened. I wasn’t allowed to go out and was kept indoors the entire time.

He eventually came down, and we had a family discussion. He apologized and asked my mum to prepare, as he would soon come with his people to do the necessary rites. My mum informed the ‘umu nna’ (relatives) about his plans.

We waited patiently, but he never showed up nor did he call to explain. The last time we talked on the phone, he suggested I ‘swear’ that the child was his. I agreed.

After that conversation, I never heard from him again. He didn’t call or send any money.

I was close to delivering when he called again. He apologized and begged me to take him back. I did, and he sent 50,000 Naira for the hospital expenses. However, he disappeared again, leaving me with no support.

After I delivered, he called to congratulate me and sent another 50,000 Naira for the hospital bill, promising to come the next day. But a month passed, and we didn’t hear from him.

When my son was 10 months old, he came back, apologized, and asked for another chance. As a mother who wanted the best for her child, I forgave him. I thought things would go back to how they were when we first met, despite the relationship being abusive. He respected me a lot, but after I got pregnant, everything changed.

So, he returned, claiming he was ready to make things right and bring us home. He said he would do the needful.

That very day he arrived in Awka, I was at work. My mum called me, eager for me to marry and avoid being mocked by her friends. I left work and hurried home.

We had a meeting where he gave excuses for his actions and asked for forgiveness. I wasn’t keen on giving him another chance, but I wanted to fulfill my mum’s dream of seeing her first child with a complete family, so I forgave him.

That night, he lodged in a nearby hotel and requested I join him to discuss things privately. I went with Satya (my child). However, due to his busy schedule with friends, we didn’t discuss much that night. The next morning, he asked me to drop Satya off at home and return to the hotel.

When I returned, he was still busy. Later that night, he asked for sex, which I declined. He respected my decision and didn’t force himself on me.

The next morning, he seemed moody. I didn’t push for a conversation, so I asked to leave since he wasn’t ready to discuss anything with me.

After a few minutes, he broke his silence. He told me he was going to Orlu and would call me when he returned so we could visit his sister in Enugu. He said he would handle my bride price and everything else before returning to Lagos.

I agreed and left, returning to work.

Four days passed, and I didn’t hear from him. When I finally called, he said he had returned to Lagos because my refusal to have sex with him made him believe I had someone else in mind.

I smiled, knowing his intentions for coming back were not genuine.

That was the second time he messed up.

In December last year, we tried to fix our issues and make things right again. He complained about me sharing our problems online, so I apologized and deleted everything.

In the same month, he called, saying he would come to Anambra for us to settle things, at least for the sake of our child.

To cut the story short, he asked me to give up social media before anything could happen between us. I declined because my happiness comes first. He’s nothing but a destiny killer, and that was the end of our relationship.

Throughout our fights and make-ups, he sent little funds for our child’s upkeep. I wondered why the support was so minimal, but I figured he was using it as evidence to claim ownership of the child later.

I eventually stopped him from sending his ‘tiny’ support. With or without him, I will take care of my child. I made up my mind.

It hasn’t been easy taking up the responsibility, but I will keep pushing.

All this time, while he was absent, I’ve been the one filling in the gaps.

Thanks to myself for being such an amazing mother and father to my child.

Social media has given me the opportunity to be a better woman, and I’m glad I’m using it well.

Satya is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Only God knows how much I love that child.

I have every reason to be grateful for the ill-treatment life threw at me because, out of it, I got a Gift—Satya.

Single mother or not, I will never settle for less.”
